    More aggressive cutting chain

Bob Hedgecutter Thank you. I'm gonna stick with what I have and work on keeping my chains sharp. I have to do more practice on sharping my chains the right way, and stop trying to re-invent the wheel. I have plenty of chains left over from prior work, so I have a decent lot to work with. Thanks...

    More aggressive cutting chain

My Farm Boss 290 came with a 3639 005 0074 26RS 74 chain. A good chain, but is there another chain that my Farm Boss can use? I read somewhere of a "chisel" type, or something like that. Can someone suggest a aggressive cutting chain other than the one I'm currently using, for my 290? Thank You.

Bar and Chain for Farm Boss 290

I have a Farm Boss 290, and the stock bar and chain works well, but I'd like to get a slightly longer bar and the chain that compliments that length and still works with the current stock drive gear/sprocket. Has anyone added to their Farm Boss 290 a longer bar plus chain? On the other hand, if...

    I;m forever sharping my chain(s)

Without being too personal, do you do this stuff for a living? The reason for asking is, how do you folks on this web site come by all this information? I thought I was pretty much UP on this stuff with learning how to sharpen my chain, take care of the bar, and cleaning the air filter. Talk...

    I;m forever sharping my chain(s)

This is a coincidence. A cutting crew was taking down a dead tree two blocks over from me, so I drove over and asked the operator cutting the large branches off what he recommended. When I told him I had a 290, he said he had one, but it proved to be heavy and difficult to manage in the bucket...

    I;m forever sharping my chain(s)

chainsawmaster1000 Bingo! You hit it dead on. I used a measuring tool that I bought shortly after purchasing my 290, and in that kit was some sort of a tool that looked kinda strange. I then found out that this thing is to measure the height of the rakers. I just started filing the rakers to the...

    Box display is confusing

You are probably lucky the powerline worker was not using a 395XP! Your right, Bob. I should've noticed the guy cutting trees and telephone poles, came in rug sizes... 9X11. On the other hand, so far so good with my Farm Boss 290. She's a bear alright, and I give this thing a wide berth of...

    Box display is confusing

Thank you for all the quick replies. I got my STIHL Farm Boss 290 a few years ago, after we had a nasty ice storm. The storm knocked out a lot of power lines and assorted services. So I bought a Englander wood furnace, this Farm Boss 290, and went to work making sure we were never out of heat...

    Box display is confusing

On the box that I buy my chains in, it shows a pictures of a file for sharping, to be 3/16. Then another picture of the pitch to be .325 I want to purchase a STIHL sharpener with both the rattail file and the flat file for the scraper, and the description of the file says it's Stihl Replacement...

    I;m forever sharping my chain(s)

I have a STIHL Farm boss 290. The chain that came with it is a 3639 005 0074 26RS 74 It seems that the life span of this type of chain (low kick back) requires sharpening a lot. I'll go through three, 20ft, ok logs, then the chain is not cutting. If I do get a cut, sawdust is the output. Is...
