Got a new saw today. A tiny 25cc top handle. Remarkably nice saw. The reason I am astounded is that while the quality of name brand saws is outstanding, this saw is pure chinesium. Not quite the cheapest saw on ebay... I spent $10 more to buy from a company that actually claims to stock and sell...

    Too Much Oil

What kind of oil are you using? Bar and chain oil contains additives to increase tackiness. Motor oil, new or used, will sling a lot more mess. NOTE: There are 3 grades of bar oil: summer, all-season, and winter. Oddly, not every vendor labels their bar oil appropriately. I assume they would be...

    spike orientation

The purpose of the dogs is to help the operator get the saw to dig in and efficiently use the power of the saw to cut without having to use as much muscle. Good dogs also help the operator keep the cut straight. Some well known and respected manufacturers either use plastic dogs or no dogs at...

    spike orientation

That is not right. The dogs (spiky things) are supposed to be parallel to the bar. If you take the side cover off and remove the bar and chain, you can determine how the dogs are attached. They may be held on by screws. However they are attached, remove them. You may be able to straighten them...

    266XP Bar Stud Repairs.

Thanks for the discussion, Bob. Hope I wasn't too annoying. I've always figured the secret of life is to be just annoying enough.

    266XP Bar Stud Repairs.

OK, I get all that... and somewhere along the line the case got, to put it gently, modified, in order to accept a bolt. Right? So... an ideal fix would be to TIG weld a plug and redrill with a tapered bit to accept a stock stud. Seems to me that would be way more than the value of the saw would...

    266XP Bar Stud Repairs.

No I'm not. My mechanical expertise (such as it is) has been garnered from motorcycles and outboard motors. If you're up for explaining the issue, I would be happy to learn.

The M8s in my box all have 13-mm heads. Both straight hex and flanged. https://www.mcmaster.com/metric-flange-bolts/medium-strength-metric-class-8-8-steel-flanged-hex-head-screws/ I understand the long-term reasons for using a stud instead of a bolt when going into a magnesium case. If you're...

    266XP Bar Stud Repairs.

Was there more than one configuration for the 266 over it's history? I tend to be stubborn, and I like to solve puzzles... sooooo, why not use an insert so you could use an m8 bolt instead of whatever was bodged on?

All I had was the picture to go on. It looked to me like the threads were damaged. If they're in good shape, obviously there would be no need to use a thread insert.

    Chainsaw case?

I'm not cheerful enough! But I do have a bunch of cedar logs I could trim to fit the bed of my truck. :D

Doesn't mean the replacement stud has to be.

    Chainsaw case?

I like your thinking. Another solution I'm considering is one I've seen... A hunk of wood in the pickup bed and let the saw cut it's own slot.

    Chainsaw case?

UPDATE I wound up returning it. The 20" bar on the Homelite fit the scabbard but the baseplate of the powerhead was too big... well, the saw is 70cc. So the case was returned. Do you guys use anything to protect your saws during transport and/or storage?

    Chainsaw case?

I don't expect them to say anything except "Here's yer money." It's not their fault. The product number and UPC are correct for the 24" bar. I just don't know whether the factory made an error in packaging or if the error is systematic. Actually, I may not return it. I have an old Homelite...

    Chainsaw case?

I have an Echo 590 with 24" bar. I ordered the Echo case for it and the box has the proper number for the 24" bar. But the scabbard does not fit. It looks like the 20" model. Is this a fluke and likely to be solved with a return and reorder? Or should I look for another solution?

    2077 and 266XP had a wee spin

I didn't understand the problem with cows... looked it up. That's not an issue I would have thought of on my own. But then I don't own any cows. It looks like there could be some pretty chunks of wood that could be had, though.
