Hi All, I'm new here. The prior owner of my property left behind a bunch of old chainsaws. One of them is a Shindawa 488, which I plan to get running.

I'm starting by removing the carb to give it a soak, but before I go and break something, I wanted to check with this community to help advise me how to remove this thing.

All I need to do now is disconnect the throttle and choke linkages, however despite my best efforts, I can't get them unhooked and I'm worried I'm going to bend something. Any suggestions?

Not real familiar with Shindaiwa's- but it works pretty much the same with most saws.
You have to remove the two hex drive screws that hold the carb to the mounting plate- remove the filter elbow and the fixing screws.
Remove fuel and impulse (if it has an exterior impulse) lines.
The choke rod should possibly be mounted in a slide out case part? The rod should lift out of that position and come free of the back of the airbox.
The carb can then be lifted and rotated so the throttle linkage rod comes out of the operating lever and the carb body lifted free.

Thank you...I was able to get it removed...it took quite a bit of twisting of the carb and some vice grip work, but everything came off and doesn't appear to have gotten bent.

Would it be adviseable for me to purchase a carb kit for this carb, or would a good cleaning/soak suffice?

If carb kit, what does this community recommend? I'm a little leery about a kit off of Amazon, but maybe they aren't bad?

Interesting- should not have required vice grips- but okay!
There will be a number on the carb body (21-245) - that number can be searched for the appropriate genuine Walbro repair kit and that is the route I would be taking for a one off reconditioning.
