2001 385xp rebuild

Guys,
Recently bought a new 372xp(xt), and have been fiddling around with breaking it in (fun!)….oh, the gas tank got busted in shipping, so I got to learn the saw by replacing that 1st thing on a new saw!. About a week after the purchase, and because I watch WAAAAAAAY too many YT chainsaw videos (you know who you are you little leprechauns, you!!), I saw () this 385 pop up on FB Marketplace for $150 only 30 minutes from where I live! I quickly sold my C2 rower (‘cause who needs one of those if you swing an axe…right?!) for some cash and bought it….yes, I called to check the serial # in the database to make sure it wasn’t a…..hotsaw. Long story a bit longer, the carb’s kaput, so I’m switching that out, I’ll be buying/installing a new OEM jug & piston set, likely tweaking the ports thanks to these gentlemen’s shenanigans…Bayou/Ironhorse/AFC/Hotsaws101, and replacing most of the rubber/wear parts on the saw. I’ll link some photos as she is now, and upload more as the project progresses. Input is absolutely encouraged & welcomed, as I’ve ran saws in horrible conditions for 40 yrs, but am definitely new to the “modding” game. Thanks much, All!!

Looks like it's cleaning up good! My only suggestion is to swap in the old school pre EPA fuel tank vent because that EPA vent doesn't vent good, especially if it's modified a little.

The part number is: 501 87 31-01

I have one in good condition and like it a lot. Bolted a OEM 390 jug on it but swapped back to the original. Don't know why, it just sounded better!

I went with the smaller bore because I felt with what I wanted to do with it, the weight reduction would help with longevity.

Yessir, those saws are plagued with bottom end issues with the bigger top end. They pretty much had it sorted out with the 385 platform

I’d heard the 385/390’s were prone to early bearing failure…

Well the 385 had a badly designed PTO bearing that was for the most part remedied with a revised bearing, but then they added the extra weight and it started having issues again.

I’ll check for play when I have it torn down. Would love to just split the cases and replace the bearings & seals, but don’t have a puller or splitter yet. I’ll get there eventually

I’m leaning towards just changing out all the rubber & wear through use parts while I have it torn down…might be prudent to find a good donor saw to pull parts from rather than buying every piece bit by bit…not sure?

Really don’t NEED a splitter and puller. Heat works very nicely

The splitter does make it easy, but as he stated above, you can use a press or a mallet to separate those cases by applying lots of heat and tapping/pressing the crank and the cases will split.
