I would not have thought of ever doing it in such a way!
My first instinct would be to remove the crank to work on it. Leaving it in the saw seems to be a cunning plan.
I've fixed them with the crank out in the lathe or repaired just a small chip with the crank installed and finished it by hand. Never thought to spin the whole thing in the lathe.
