Hi,
I have a husqvarna chainsaw that I'm trying to fix. It has only only nut to hold the cover in place. (see image)

Now I want to adjust the chain tension. I start by loosening the single nut, then adjust the tension with the slotted screw. At this point, the chain runs smoothly around the blade.

The issue occurs when I tighten the nut that secures the cover in place. If I tighten it properly, the chain no longer moves on the blade, almost as if the cover's pressure creates friction on the chain or pulley. If I leave the nut slightly loose, the chain tension becomes unstable and loosens after just a few seconds of using the chainsaw.

Also the brake doesn't seem to work.

Any idea??

I hate those saws with a vengance.....

But, it sounds like something is not lining up, is bent out of shape, or is incorrect fitment.
If chain has been replaced- could be as simple as incorrect gauge or profile of chain and it is physically too fat for the channel to run in.
The metal plate the covers the oil pump could be bent/buckled/ misaligned.
The plastic covers on the inside face of the clutch cover misaligned or broken/ missing screws.

The brake not working? If everything is aligned and the flag activates the mechanics of the brake but the band does not grab the clutch bell- my guess the band is broken- you need to remove the upper plastic cover possibly to investigate the condition of the band.

You cannot safely operate the saw with a loose bar stud nut- as you have discovered- the chain adjuster merely moves the loose bar to the correct position- tightening down the bar stud nut hold the bar in place- the adjuster has NO positional holding power for a running saw.
