Those are great running saws. They do get abused by climbers, dropped, swung into trees on lanyard and twisted to flick wood off. Have repaired several for local tree service friend.
58 guage, 3/8 full chisel on 20 inch bar, 50 guage, 3/8 full chisel on 24". Why, most common in area. You said start with 50 guage, move to 58 as bar wears. Why not just keep bar dressed and rails closed?
I would skip 3/4 throttle, believe 3 settings will work, off, idle and full throttle under load. Rebuilt several saws used with a wizard running 1/2-3/4 throttle and had not seen extended use.
I agree, chains can be hit or miss. Yes, even Stihl chains. Have purchased some Carlton and Laser chains that seem to hold their edge better than big name brands, but type of wood and how it's been handled makes a huge difference. Drag a log through our sandy soil here and watch sparks fly.
