Poulan Pro5020 starter assist spring keeps bending

Hi, I have a Poulan Pro PP5020AV that runs great but I had to replace a bent torsion spring in the recoil starter hub but now it seems to bend every new spring I put in. To make matters more confusing the starter hub doesn’t even seem to stick far enough into the starter to engage the clips and turn the motor when I pull. Is there a non spring assisted starter hub that will work. I love this saw and just want to get it running again. Thanks

Without seeing the saw and making a guess- I would say whatever the issue was that caused the first failure has not been corrected and is simply being repeated.
A lot comes down to using the correct starting procedure with these "soft start" saws.

Thanks Bob, I’ve ordered another spring and hub starter kit and will try again. I understand now that pulling too hard can cause this problem. I Will post an update once I know the result of this latest attempt to resolve the problem.

This gives "some" good points- regarding tensioning spring and aligning the hub- but do NOT start the saw like this fellow.

Thanks yeah I saw that video. It didn’t really cover the assist spring replacement (more the rope replacement) but yeah he starts the saw like I was before which is likely the problem I had. However the assist spring in my kit had one end painted yellow. I wasn’t sure if maybe I had installed it upside down? Does it matter?

No idea off hand where the yellow goes- I shy away from trying to repair consumer grade saws if I can.
However there are several Craftsman 55's in the shed, willing to bet they are much the same saw in a different colour.

Thanks again, I too have kept a few older chainsaws I no longer use in case I need the parts. Will do the same with this one if I end up buying a new one.
