while running my husky 440 the nut that holds the clutch cover in place keeps vibrating loose. I have to stop ever 5 minutes or so to tighten it back up or the chain falls off. If I tighten it down too tight then the chain can’t move.

Do I need to replace the nut or the bolt that the nut is tied to?
Or is something else amiss that I am missin.

thanks.

Have you recently replaced the chain- the bar- or both?
If all ducks are in a row, the nut must be reasonably tight to do its job- not that tight that it pulls the stud from the case- but not loose either.
If tightening the nut is binding the chain- something is not correct in there- like a missing part- or incorrect chain size- incorrect bar tail.
Or, the threads could be stripped and never holding in the first place- would explain the coming loose- but not the chain binding when tightened.

Thanks, it is weird. Going to pick up a new nut this afternoon and see if that solves the problem. Hope it does because it will be a cheap fix. also will check everything out under the clutch cover. So hopefully I can solve the issue

No I haven’t replaced either of those until today. I went down to the hardware store to get a new nut. They didn’t have any “chainsaw”:nuts but I found one that fit plus it wasn’t as tall as the oem. So I also got a lock washer. Went home tore the saw apart and cleaned everything. Put it back together with the original nut, and it still shook loose. Then I noticed the chain wasn’t sitting quite properly on the bar. Both the chain and the bar looked fine to my eyes. I replaced the chain and used the new nut and washer, and the problem appears to be gone.

thanks folks!

Okay, if your chain is that kapoodled that tightening the clutch cover caused it to bind- I would be looking pretty seriously at the drive sprocket or spur and the bar itself.
If they are major worn, the new chain will chop out in no time.

Oh and a split lock washer? Will chew out the alloy seat on the cover pretty fast- they supply the saw with a flange nut for a reason.
If the problem is solved- original nut should be used.
