Good example of a Pine log that has been laying on the ground and sunk in somewhat, allowing the soil and pebble ingress into the cavities on the bark.
Dead sitter to ruin the edge off of any chain cutters that come into contact as they go through.
Admittingly, this cut has gone a bit far from the upper clean side and is already into the dirty bark, but this log was shifted and slid into place compliments of an excavator and a root rake, no grapple- and obviously, this section has been rolled to get the bottom off of the ground.
Nicest gift to give a sharp chain is to take a minute and chip off the dirty bark with a hatchet or axe, before finishing the cut.
As most everyone will know though, every intended caution taken does not mean you won't get the odd stone strike and have your saw cutting circles!
Lord knows I dulled 3 chains in quick succession this morning- but if your saw starts cutting in C's and pulling to one side, slip your thumb nail up against the cutter leading edge and pull your thumb up, then do the teeth on the other side of the chain- one side will easily score your thumb nail, the other duller side- not so much.
