This is my first post so sorry if I'm in the wrong place or doing things wrong. I just snagged up a Craftsman saw from a coworker who was junking it. It runs great. I cleaned it up a little, sharpened the chain, and it seems like it should be pretty solid. The thing is, I can't figure out what saw it is. Every search I do comes up with a similar saw, but with a chain brake or the fuel cap at the back of the trigger guard. Any ideas on this saw? I'd love an owners/maintenance manual (I'm a diesel mechanic by trade, I love knowing all there is about specific machines and I also love manuals). I appreciate the help in advance.

Its a Roper- defined by the 917 prefix on the serial number.
Exact model I am not sure- possibly you were looking at Poulan 25's as they look similar- but not the same.

Search Roper 2.5 and see what you get?

Bob,

That seems like it! Thank you. I am very novice when it comes to small engines, even more so with 2 strokes. Any idea what oil mix a saw from the 80/90s runs?

No idea- but whatever ratio you decide (I like 40:1) the saw must be tuned for that ratio.
Likely it was recommended 25:1 or 33:1 or similar with 30wt oil- modern 2 stroke oils are much better than the options of the 1970's.
